Lake Compounce Theme Park Adds MAMMOTH FALLS for 2001

Bristol/Southington,
CT March 7, 2001- Each year since it undertook the
management of Lake Compounce, Kennywood Entertainment
Company has delivered major new attractions to thrill
park-goers, from the Zoomerang Steel Roller Coaster to the
Thunder Rapids White Water Rafting Ride, from Splash Harbor
Water Park to last year's amazing new addition: the mountain
coaster, Boulder Dash; and this year is no exception. The
2001 addition to "The Lake's" impressive list of
rides and attractions is the $1.5 million family raft ride
called MAMMOTH FALLS.
Mammoth Falls is a 10-foot wide, 551-foot long flume ride
located in the Splash Harbor Water Park. The wood tower and
fiberglass flume ride is the first major expansion for
Splash Harbor, which was built in 1998. The front two-thirds
of the ride is dark-enclosed with a curtain of water at
either end; the back third is an open-air slide, and the
total drop is 50 feet.
Three 60-horsepower pumps move over 8,000 gallons of water
per minute as the rafts make their way down the flume. (If
you've ever seen ESPN's X Games, imagine extreme
skateboarding or extreme rollerblading with water!) A
conveyer returns the empty rafts to the beginning of the
ride (much like a bowling alley ball return) so rafters
don't have to carry their transportation up to the top to
ride.
The Lake's general manager, Tom Wages, describes Mammoth
Falls as a "bathing suit ride." He said, "You
definitely will get wet," as you pass under the two
water curtains and ride up and down the sides of the flume.
"It's an exciting ride," he added, "great fun
for the whole family."
Each raft will hold four adults or a combination of up to
two adults and three children. Children must be at least 36
inches tall to ride, and children who are between 36 inches
and 48 inches tall must be accompanied by an adult.
Lake Compounce, which straddles the Bristol/Southington town
lines in central Connecticut, has been transformed in the
last four years. More than $40 million has been invested in
more than 30 new rides and attractions to become New
England's Family Theme Park. Kennywood Entertainment of
Pittsburgh, which operates three parks in western
Pennsylvania, became the new managing partner of Lake
Compounce in 1996.
