Fire Safety

Keep
all candles, matches and lighters away from children.

Always supervise children around any heat source.

Children should never play with extinguishers.

Teach children to stay away from woodstoves,
fireplaces, and all heat sources.

Know How to treat a burn - See First Aid Tips

Teach
children to stay away from fire pits and campfires. Be careful
when roasting marshmellows and hotdogs that clothes do not come into
contact with fire. Also be careful with roasting sticks.
Ensure that campfires are out.

Matches and Lighters
-
Keep all matches and lighters away from children and
out of sight. Never allow children to play with matches or
lighters.

Remove all candles, matches and lighters from your
hotel room immediately.

Teach
children about the dangers of lighters and matches. While
lighters sold in Canada must be "Child-Resistant" this does
not mean they are "child-proof". Children as young as
18 months have started fires with lighters.

Never leave lighters in the care on a hot day, near a
heater, fireplace or stove, where they can explode.

Hotel and Hotel Room
Fire Safety
-
Look for and remove all candles, matches and lighters
from your hotel room immediately.
-
Plan a safety escape. When you arrive at your
hotel find out where the nearest safety exists are.

Never dry clothing on heaters or a fireplace/woodstove
-
If a fire alarm rings, leave the hotel by the nearest
stairs
or fire exit, but before opening the door feel for heat and check for
smoke. If there is heat or smoke, look for another
exit.

Leave the hotel room immediately when hearing the fire
alarm. Do not go back for belongings.
-
Do not go in the elevator if the alarm is sounding. If
you hear the alarm in the elevator, press the nearest floor on the
panel, exit the elevator as quickly as possible and exit the hotel as
quickly and calmly as possible.

Remain calm and comfort children to reassure them.
-

Candle Safety
-
Be
careful with candles on birthday cakes. Ensure that children's hair
and clothing does not come in contact with flames.
-
Be especially careful around really young
children. Never put a birthday cake with candle on a highchair
tray.
-
Do not use spray string or any flammable products near
candles.
-
Keep balloons and toys away from candles.
-
Look for and remove all candles, matches and lighters
from your hotel room immediately.
-
Be extra vigilant about candles around holiday times,
when people tend to use candles more often. See

Do not leave candles burning unattended.
-
Cut candlewicks short to prevent a high flame.
-
Don't use candles with more than one wick close
together.
-
Please candles where they can not be knocked down but
keep them away from anything that can catch fire, especially curtains,
towels, bedding and clothing.

Use sturdy candle holders that won't tip over (never
use wood or plastic candle holders) and ensure that candles are placed
firmly in holder.
-
Be careful with glass candleholders as they can break
if the flame gets too hot.
-
Candles with lead wicks should not be used.
Check the wick for metal core and dispose of in garbage if metal is
evident.

When dining out with young children, ensure that there
are no candles on the table that can burn children if touched.

Pajama and
Clothing Safety
-
Teach children never to play with matches, lighters,
candles and fire.
-
Teach children to Stop, Drop and Roll if clothing
catches fire.
-
Choose clothing for children that is snug fitting,
especially pajamas. Avoid loose flowing nighties and wide
sleeves and ruffles.
-
Dress children in proper sleepwear, not T-shirts or
other street clothes. Children's pajamas are required to be
treated as flame resistant and not made of cotton, which can catch
fire more quickly that synthetic materials.
-
Cotton, cotton-blend, fleece, terrycloth and sheer
loosely woven or light weight fabrics will ignite more easily and burn
more quickly than synthetic fiber.

Remove all drawstrings and cords from pajamas and
