Wigamog Inn Resort for a Wiggy Good
Family Getaway.
After a long, cold, Canadian winter our family was ready for a
well-deserved spring getaway with a little Wiggy thrown INN for good
measure - the Wigamog Inn Resort that is. Easter weekend provided an
ideal opportunity for us to do just that.
It also gave us an opportunity to profile this popular family resort,
now a Hotel Fun 4 Kids Rated Destination, as a www.hotelfun4kids.com
feature "Visit" and find out why over 70% of resort guests are
returning guests.
Wigamog Inn Resort is a year-round vacation resort located on the
shores of Lake Kashagawigamog in Central Ontario's Haliburton Highlands,
just three hours northeast of Toronto. The drive through the
Haliburton Highlands to reach the Resort was just the start of our
relaxing getaway, as we enjoyed the region's great scenery.
| As we rounded the corner on North Lake Kashagawigamog Road, the
Resort's Main Inn provided a picture perfect scene of the lake
surrounded by rolling hills and towering pines. This put us in
a holiday frame of mind - and that’s all before we even checked in. |
 |
Easter Weekend is a prime example of a Holiday Weekend with themed
activities geared towards children, families and even "adults
only". Events like the Great Wiggy Easter Egg Hunt and Easter
egg making help families celebrate the holiday.
 |
Resort guests gather at the recreation centre with baskets in hand
ready to start the Easter Egg Hunt. It was amazing to see all
the places the Easter Bunny hid those eggs. |
While the Resort's full activity programming is offered
only during the summer and school vacation periods, anytime of the year is
a great time to visit Wigamog, as we found out. We received the
weekend activity schedule on our check-in, while guests during holiday
periods can pick up a daily activity schedule at the front desk.
Included in all vacation packages at Wigamog is the
complimentary Wiggy Kids Program. While the boys participated in the
interesting activities, my husband and I took a leisurely stroll around
the resort and had a relaxing soak in the hot tub by the indoor pool.
During non- holiday periods the program is organized for children under 5
years and a separate group for children 5 years and up. The boys
were pleased about this - they could hang together. Seven separate
age groups are offered during the summer and holiday package periods.
Evening Wiggy activities included the Kids Evening
Supervised Dinner Buffet and movie. Events like this bring the
resort's children aged 5 years and up together for a meal and some
socializing - with no parents insisting on perfect manners. We
couldn't complain about a quiet dinner with just the two of us either.
Every evening offered an activity or movie for kids to
enjoy. Children 5 and under meet in Arthurs Playroom while older
children have a separate meeting location. Arthurs Playroom can
also be used by parents during non-program hours as a playroom.
The flexibility and hours of the program gave us enough
time during the day to enjoy the family activities too, including one of
our favourites, beach volleyball.
With some free time in the afternoon under the spring
sun a few games of doubles tennis with the boys was in order.
Although early in the season, the match was close and challenging. I
am not telling who won though!
Recreation is a big part of what makes Wigamog so
popular with families and is always something we look for when planning a
resort vacation.
Our younger son, Stephen, when asked what he enjoyed
most, couldn't decide between shooting hoops at the basketball net for
some "21" with Dad and his brother and Wigamog's playgrounds.

The recreation centre has plenty of equipment for guest
use including basketballs, tennis equipment, board games bikes with
helmets and a lot more.
Year round there is plenty of complimentary recreational
pursuit available to guests. Summer guests can make use of all
non-motorized water sports, biking, shuffleboard, horseshoes, hiking, the
outdoor pool and 1000 feet of sandy beach. With an indoor pool,
whirlpool, sauna and fitness area located in the main Inn to the
Games Room and arcade located in the Moose Bar and Grill, there is
something for everyone indoors as well. Winter time is popular
at the resort too with it's own unique seasonal recreation pursuits.
Since this was the first time we actually travelled with
an official teenager, I wanted to pay special attention to what he
was looking for at the Resort.
 |
Initially he was worried about what he would do,
but once he found the arcade his fears were put to rest. |
The mountain biking along with the "Cool"
Beach Bonfire were hits with him and he couldn't resist helping his
brother with the Easter Egg Hunt - of course he had to share the booty
too!
For adults looking for some entertainment just for them,
evening shows at the Moose Bar and Grill fits the bill. Babysitting
is available with trained staff and arrangements can be made at the front
desk. Since we had a teenager with us we were able to take in the
Yuk Yuks Comedians without the need for a babysitter. This was the
first for us.
Our Vacation Package at Wigamog included breakfast and
dinner daily from check-in to check out, including a delicious Easter
Sunday Breakfast Buffet, as part of the Modified American Plan.
Wigamog has perfected family dining with its unique
approach of three dining areas where families can relax knowing that
they are all in the same boat - so to speak. Parents with children
under three receive extra special consideration with a large dining area
that affords a wall of windows overlooking the lake and is in the same
room as the buffet tables for breakfast. As a mother I thought this
was an excellent idea - you don’t have to go far for your food and can
quickly refill plates for the little ones. Since all the families
dining in this room have young children you can relax a little more during
the meal. An area for families with older children and an
"Adult's Only" dining area ensures that everyone enjoys their
meal.
A lot of thought and planning has gone into the
arrangement and serving of meals for families at this resort. An
interesting conversation with Peter, the Food and Beverage Manager
revealed that once families are seated for their first meal they usually
have the same table for their entire stay. Returning families get their
same table if possible and/or may be moved up to one of the much sought
after window tables. This attention to returning guests is just one of the
ways that Wigamog has earned the loyalty of families who return year after
year, often rebooking their vacation before they leave the resort.
Breakfast is served as a buffet while dinner offers a
selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts. Children can choose
to dine off the menu or from the children's buffet selections.
Our compliments to the chef at Wigamog as all our meals were delicious and
the fresh waffles for breakfast are not to be missed.
There are a variety of accommodations at Wigamog Inn
Resort, ranging from Inn and motel rooms to suites and cottages with up to
three bedrooms.
Our choice was a one-bedroom Jacuzzi Suite and as soon
as we entered the boys claimed the back bedroom as their domain.
Part of the attraction being that they could hide in the closet - boys!!!!
| This was fine by us as we looked forward to some
privacy and a little added romance to our getaway with an oversized
Jacuzzi Tub and woodstove. |
 |
 |
The mini fridge with a small counter
and sink proved ideal for some late night refreshments. |
Our taste of this year-round resort’s
renowned activity programs for all ages, recreation, attention to families
in the dining room and spacious accommodations revealed just a few of the
reasons why this resort is so popular with families and why so many guests
reserve their return to Wiggy before they even leave the resort.
