What's On Whistler - March 2005
March is always a great month for skiing and snowboarding in Whistler
with an average snowfall accumulation of 166 centimetres (66 inches). In
case that isn't enough of a reason to plan your spring ski vacation, the
New York Post recently listed Whistler in its "10 Best Top Bargains on
the world's most appealing slopes", while Ski Canada magazine has rated
Whistler Blackcomb the Canadian ski resort with "The most vertical for
your dollar" in its Winter 2005 issue. Whistler is offering excellent
peak to valley conditions-and more terrain and vertical means more ski
runs, spectacular views and experiences for beginners and experts alike.
Along with the fun on the mountains, Whistler's wide range of winter
activities available in March include snowmobiling, snowshoeing,
Ziptreking, and cross country skiing at the top of Whistler Mountain.
Here are some of the highlights to look for in Whistler this March...
Heli-Snowmobiling
Canadian Snowmobile is now offering visitors to Whistler an exclusive
new helicopter snowmobile tour. Guests participating on the tour are
flown ten minutes via helicopter to a remote avalanche safe, backcountry
mountain area for three hours of guided riding and a mountain top lunch.
All of the gear and equipment is provided. The tour can accommodate four
people and runs twice daily at 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Heli-Snowmobiling
is a perfect activity for intermediate and advanced snowmobile riders.
Classical Music at Maurice Young Millennium Place
Maurice Young Millennium Place is pleased to welcome Jasper Wood, one of
the top violinists of his generation, to Whistler on March 4. Wood has
won numerous international prizes and awards including both the Sylva
Gelber Award and the Virginia Parker Prize, two of the most
distinguished prizes awarded by the Canada Council for the Arts. The
show starts at 8 p.m.
On March 17, the Alcan String Quartet will present an evening of
classical music at Millennium Place. The Alcan String Quartet is
celebrating its 15th season together and the group is widely regarded as
being among the most dynamic ensembles on the Canadian chamber music
scene today. The quartet has performed the works of Haydn, Mozart,
Brahms, Borodin, Debussy, Dvorak and Schubert throughout Canada and
United States.
One Man Lord of the Rings Trilogy with Charles Ross
March 12-13, Charles Ross returns to Maurice Young Millennium Place to
perform a one-man show. Last year he graced audiences with a fast,
furious and funny one-man rendition of the original Star Wars Trilogy.
This year he will perform the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Charles
recreates, without the use of costumes, set, or special effects, Peter
Jackson's movie trilogy, and plays all the characters, performs the
music, fights the battles, cries the tears, and ultimately triumphs over
evil, in only 3,600 seconds.
Atomic Ski & Snowboard Supercross
March 24-25, Whistler Blackcomb presents the Atomic Ski & Snowboard
Supercross. The recreational races open to all ages. Amateur skiers and
boarders will compete in different divisions on the Nintendo GAMECUBE
Terrain Park Snowcross course. Participants must register prior to the
race day at any Whistler Blackcomb Guest Relations or Ski School Sales
location. The event starts at 10:30 a.m. both mornings at the entrance
to the GAMEGUBE Terrain Park and helmets are mandatory. The cost for the
two-day event is $30 per person.
