Families can take a Vacation
in a Mountain Meadow-Austrian Style at the Trapp Family Lodge
As you travel up Trapp Hill Road, just outside of
Stowe, Vermont, you can understand why the Von Trapp family choose
the 2,800 acre mountain plateau as home.
Built in a distinctly tyrolean style complete with
a traditional bell tower, the charm and elegance of the Trapp
Family Lodge creates an atmosphere of old world Austria that
welcomes guests complete with all the modern conveniences of a
first class resort.
The Resort's main lodge and recreational
facilities are located in a mountain meadow with a spectacular
view of the Worcester Mountain Range in the distance.
There are 116 spacious modern guests rooms, all
with mountain views decorated in European style furnishings and
many of the rooms have balconies or private patios.
The meadow across the street from the Main Lodge
is the hub of family activity during the summer
months.
Four clay tennis courts await players anxious to
take on opponents in the fresh mountain air. A sand filled
playground area gives children a place of their own in the
pastural setting, with swings, climbing structure and more.
The upper plateau features a pond where frogs leap
and splash through the clear mountain water.
A
large heated pool in the meadow is a gathering place for
families. The shallow area and wide steps make it a great
spot for kids to enjoy some water play, while some kids just have
to jump right in. Towels are provided for guests.
The indoor pool and fitness center overlook the
valley.
The von Trapps were immortalized in "The Sound of Music" and
music is a big part of the experience at the Lodge. Family
Sing-alongs with Rosmarie von Trapp and musical entertainment at
the Concert Meadow are popular family activities.
Another favorite family activity is the
horse-drawn
wagon rides in summer and sleigh rides in winter. Its a
great way to tour the resort and view the Lodge's gardens, farm
and the valley. Grab the wagon at the Gift Shop and enjoy
the ride.
Offered during the summer months, selected
weekends and holiday periods during other seasons, the Mountain
Kids Club is a favorite way for youngsters to experience the
highland area and participate in special adventures.
Here are some examples of the fun:
-
Nature Adventures let kids explore the woods
and fields around the lodge, seeing animals and joining in
nature games and crafts.
-
Green Adventures explore the flora growing in
the gardens of the Lodge and the creepy crawlers that inhabit
the area.
-
Music Adventures brings the notes to life
while kids create music and instruments with the counselors.
-
Summer Family Programs encourage the
"Take My Hand" theme with walks to the Deer Pond
where guests learn how to catch and release frogs and
investigate other critters in the pond.
-
Other summer programs including family bingo,
hikes, canoeing, day trips for the adventurous and more.
Winter is a special time at the Trapp Family Lodge
when the scene changes to a pristine white landscape.
Johannes von Trapp designed the first
cross-country ski center in the United States here in 1968 and it
has grown into 100 km of groomed and back-country trails that give
skiers some of the most wonderful views in Vermont.
Professional instructions, equipment rentals and a retail shop are
available.
Snowshoeing, sleigh rides and skating are other
popular sports enjoyed at the Trapp Family Lodge during the winter
season.
The Austrian Tea Room serves specialties from the
von Trapp's native country for lunch and family style dinners
while overlooking the cattle pasture. The accompanying gift
shop features local Vermont and European crafts, and sections from
the Trapp Family Lodge specialty food line and family memorabilia.
Back at the Lodge Dining Room, intimate
candlelight sweeping mountain views create a delightful dinner
atmosphere. While the Lodge does not provide babysitting, a
local service is available for families.
The spectacular views, amenities and charm of the
Trapp Family Lodge are sure to create memories that will
"Sing" in your family's heart for a lifetime.
