What's New at the San Diego Zoo
Absolutely Apes -- The San Diego Zoo's newest exhibit "Absolutely Apes"
opened in Spring 2003 and features two charismatic ape species -- orangutans and
siamangs. This is the first time in the Zoo's history that two different species
of apes are living and playing together in one lush, tropical setting. The
enormous, glass-fronted habitat features numerous trees, play structures, ropes
and sway poles and has quickly become a favorite for many Zoo guests. Guests can
go nose-to-nose with the curious and playful apes, and the primates are always
up to something fun.
SBC Giant Panda Research Station - A healthy male giant panda cub, Mei Sheng,
was born on August 19, 2003. The San Diego Zoo is one of only four facilities in
the United States to house critically endangered giant pandas, and is the only
U.S. zoo to successfully breed, birth and rear healthy cubs. The cub went on
exhibit to the public Dec. 19, 2003. His half-sister, Hua Mei, the first giant
panda to be born at the San Diego Zoo in August 1999 is scheduled to relocate to
China this year to join a breeding program. Guests can view the panda cub, with
his mom, Bai Yun, on the Zoo's Panda Cam at
www.sandiegozoo.org.
Favorite Features: Gorilla Tropics - Home to two troops of Western lowland
gorillas, Gorilla Tropics simulates a lush African rainforest. With its natural
landscape of cascading waterfalls, grassy slopes, and climbing areas, the 8,000
square-foot habitat provides these vegetarian giants with a healthy living
environment, and offers guests several different viewing areas.
Polar Bear Plunge -- A 2.2-acre summer tundra habitat that features polar
bears, Siberian reindeer, Pallas cats, yellow-throated martens and diving ducks.
A 130,000-gallon, 12-foot-deep chilled pool allows polar bears to practice their
breaststrokes and paddles. Visitors can watch the bears from an underwater
viewing area. Zoo patrons can even see our polar bears from the comfort of their
home through Polar Cam, a live, online web cam that can be accessed from the
Zoo's Web site at www.sandiegozoo.org
EXHIBIT HIGHLIGHTS: Absolutely Apes, Tiger River, Ituri Forest, Polar Bear
Plunge, Gorilla Tropics, Scripps Aviary, Sun Bear Forest, Children's Zoo,
Reptile Mesa, African Kopje, Owens Rainforest Aviary.
