New Family Farm Opens at Minnesota Zoo
Most people no longer know anybody on a family farm. No place
to take the children to see cows, pigs and chickens. But when the
Minnesota Zoo opens its new family farm exhibit this July, kids
and their adults will be able to experience the sights and sounds
of the barnyard.
The 8.5-acre Wells Fargo Family Farm will include crop plots,
vegetable gardens and an orchard, as well as the regular array of
farm animals. Buildings will look like familiar farm structures,
but will have various play and learning activities inside.
In the chicken house, children can sit on kid-sized roosts and
nest boxes, while they learn about a chicken’s life cycle. There
will be cow milking demonstrations in the dairy barn, and litters
of piglets with their mothers in the swine barn. Long a favorite
with little zoo guests, the goat and sheep barn is still
available, where kids can feed and pet the animals.
But there’s more to farms than animals, and at the new zoo
farm you can learn how a grain elevator works and how changing
technology has increased farm production.
The farm is the newest addition to the expansive Minnesota Zoo
complex, home to 450 species. Siberian tigers, dolphins, and a
coral reef of tropical fish are among the favorite exhibits here,
and there’s an IMAX theater on site.
