AQUARIUM OF NIAGARA - AN
INTIMATE LOOK AT AQUATIC LIFE The
Aquarium of Niagara provides families with an intimate and close
up look at many different forms of aquatic life, while striving to
educate visitors about the species featured. Opened
in 1965 as the "First Inland Oceanarium", this facility
was the first aquarium to use synthetic seawater in it's saltwater
tanks. This innovation allowed the Aquarium to maintain
marine life away from a direct supply of saltwater. Staff
still mix the seawater supply by hand in large tanks located in
the basement of the facility. A popular feature at
the Aquarium is the Penguin feeding program showcasing the
endangered Peruvian Penguins, which take place at 9:30 am and 2:30
pm daily. As one of only 13 institutions in the United
States to house these unique birds, the feedings provide an
opportunity to meet the keeper afterwards to learn more about
these fascinating birds and the threats facing them along the
sub-tropical coastal areas of western South
America. Over harvesting of guano (bird feces)
for fertilizer disturbs nesting grounds, while over-fishing in the
Humboldt current reduces food supplies and even natural events
such as El Nino threaten this species' survival. In an
effort to increase the population, the Aquarium of Niagara
participates in the Species Survival Plan, promoting managed
breeding between other facilities that provide a home for these
aquatic birds. On alternate days, visitors can view
the Shark feeding as part of the special Predator Exhibit and
daily at 11:00 am and 3:45 pm visitors are encouraged to welcome
the newest member of the Harbor Seal family "Clarrise"
to the outdoor pool for a feeding session.
 The
centerpiece of the facility is the 100,000 gallon central pool,
which is home to the California Sea Lions. The Observation
Deck on the second floor provides the perfect vantage point to
enjoy the play sessions offered every 90 minutes throughout the
day. Clapping and cheering are encouraged as these
sleek swimmers jump through hoops, play with balls and catch rings
to the delight of all. An enrichment program for the
California Sea Lions promotes creativity with paint and brushes
for one-of-a-kind masterpieces which can be purchased in the gift
shop located at the entrance to the Aquarium. Not
to be missed are the fresh water and coral reef displays that
highlight interesting creatures from around the world. Take
the time to enjoy this self-guided tour and learn more as you
glance at the graphic displays located above each exhibit. In
1998, the Aquarium was bestowed with the 81st "Whaling
Wall" created by Wyland, the famous Environmental Marinelife
Artist. The size and majesty of one of nature's most
beautiful sea creatures is captured in this grand work of art. To
