Activities in the Kawarthas
Peterborough and the Kawarthas, located just two hours
from Toronto in Central Ontario, attracts families from all over the world to
visit. The area has a vast network of rivers, streams and lakes
interconnected by the Trent-Severn Waterway.
Families can visit the World's highest Lift Lock and
watch the boats as they navigate the waterway system, enjoy some of the best
fishing in Ontario, relax on a beach or take part in the many area activities.
Here are just a few of the attractions your family can
enjoy while visiting Peterborough and the Kawartha Region.
Riverview Park & Zoo
A 55-acre park and zoo featuring 27
exhibits with over
40 species, including yaks, camels, wallabies, emus, parrots,
monkeys, cougars, poison arrow frogs and meerkats. The park also features a
miniature train, a children's playground and water spray pad, and a large picnic
area along Otonabee River (complete with picnic tables). Admission is
absolutely free, and the park is open from dusk til dawn.
Wild Water and Wheels
A family water park located just
north of Peterborough which features a go-kart track, bumper boats, batting
cages,
mini-golf, carpet slide, water slides, pipeline coaster, merry-go-round
and a driving range.
Lang Pioneer Village
A living history museum, featuring
twenty fully-restored 19th-century buildings, heritage gardens, trades exhibits,
pioneer demonstrations, farmyard animals and weekly special events.
Milltown Mini Golf
Featuring batting cages and a
fully-luminated mini-golf course open from 10:00am - 11:00pm, seven days a
week.
Indian River Reptile Zoo
Canada's only accredited reptile
zoo is only 15 minutes east of Peterborough, and features over 200 specimens,
including a wide variety of snakes, alligators, turtles and lizards..
Warsaw Caves Conservation Area
Featuring 8 cave networks open to
the public to explore. All that's needed is a flashlight, a helmet and some
sturdy footwear. The park also features a
swimming beach, camping facilities,
a canoe launch and rentals, and over 20km of nature trails, some of which
feature spectacular views of the Indian River, high atop a 100 ft. cliff face.
Ecology Park
An environmental education centre, featuring a wide variety of native plants in
the wildflower garden, a butterfly garden, a
variety of frog species in the water garden, and various special events hosted
throughout the year.
Bowlerama
Featuring 1 8 five-pin lanes and 12
ten-pin lanes. Open 365 days/year. Kid's cosmic bowling on Saturdays from 4pm to 6pm and
Sundays from 3pm to 5pm.
