The Manitoba Children's
Museum - A One of a Kind Museum in Western Canada
The Manitoba Children's Museum is
the only one of its kind in Western Canada and moved to its
current location in an historic diesel locomotive repair shop at
The Forks in June 1994. Each year approximately 130,000 people
enjoy this 28,400 square foot museum, with 6 large permanent
exhibits, 2 smaller exhibits and travelling Exhibits.
Opened in 1986 with a mandate to
teach children about themselves and the world around them in an
interactive learning environment while fostering a better
understanding of our past, present, future and cultures, the
Six Permanent Exhibits at the Manitoba Children’s Museum provide
a "hands-on" experience for children between the ages
of 2 and 13 years.
PERMANENT EXHIBITS
ALL ABOARD
The Museum's signature gallery pays tribute to the building's
heritage as a locomotive repair facility. The 1952 NR Diesel
locomotive, 191 0 Pullman passenger car and 1950's train station
creates an authentic contextual environment in which children
can engage in role-play.
LIVEWIRE
Manitoba Children's Museum A gallery where children can
discover the marvels of modern computer technology. They can
surf the Internet, dance in Technicolor, tape their actions and
watch them in reverse and explore the asymmetry of their faces.
OUR TV
A fully operational television studio, which allows children
the opportunity to create their own programs. The studio is
complete with two pedestal cameras, a VCR, a CD player, an audio
mixer for special effects, microphones, a weather map, scripts
and cue cards.
SANTA VILLAGE/ONCE UPON A TIME
Eaton's donated this much-loved Winnipeg display to MCM upon
closure of its downtown Winnipeg store. Featuring fairytale
vignettes, this new addition to MCM actually plays double
gallery-duty. Throughout the months of November and December,
the gallery is open as the traditional Santa Village, with
decorations, music and an opportunity to visit with Santa. The
rest of the year, the gallery will be open at special times
under the name Once Upon A Time.
THE TREE & ME
This gallery is specifically designed for preschoolers,
houses a 17-foot representation of an oak tree, complete with
caves, a beaver lodge and 22 realistically carved animals in
their natural environment. The gallery focuses on animal homes
and provides opportunities for children to develop an awareness
that animals like people, live in and build different types of
homes.
WONDERWORKS - THE INFRASTRUCTURE GALLERY
A unique gallery that invites Museum visitors to develop an
appreciation of the infrastructure of communities and its impact
on the environment. Through interactive displays, children and
their caregivers will design their own cities, excavate using
child-size heavy equipment, and build sections of roads, bridges
and structures using a variety of building materials. The
display also explores power sources and the properties of water.
TWO SMALLER EXHIBITS
SPEAK OUT BOOTH
An operational video recording booth that invites children to
speak their minds on a topic of their choice and record their
thoughts.
SONIC PLAYGROUND
A Musical odyssey of recycled materials that create unique
music, which floats across and entertains the outdoor Forks
Market area.
COMING IN 2002
The Museum will welcome the LEGO traveling exhibit in June -
August 2002, featuring a life size submarine and ocean animals,
all made from LEGO.
Plans are in the works for a gallery associated with the
Government of Canada. This could be the first of its kind in the
country.
Museum renovations are already underway including creating a
larger rental /event space in the Great Hall, additions to the
playhouse and child-sized machinery in WonderWorks and a sign
language station and full body pin screen in Live Wire.
