Lufthansa
Continues the Tradition of Passenger Care with Special Services
for Children
Lufthansa's Special Service Team continues a long
standing tradition of passenger care that started in 1968. Nicknamed
the "Rotkappchen" ("Red Caps") by
journalists in the early days of Lufthansa's history of
special care for passengers when these professionals wore
red hats, the name stuck. While the hats are no longer
worn, about 220 staff at Frankfurt Airport that are assigned
to the Special Service Team wear red badges on their
lapels. In 1999 46,000 unaccompanied minors
utilized the assistance of the Special Service
Team. The Special Service ensures that
unaccompanied minors have access to a special room with
toys, snacks and drinks while waiting for their
flight. During the flight, the crew are responsible
for the unaccompanied minor and the Special Service ensures
that the person picking up the child upon arrival is the
designated contact. Lufthansa's staff will
also relay messages to the designated contact person if a
child misses a connecting flight or arrival at the final
destination is delayed. All youngsters, including unaccompanied minors are now being treated to tasty new
menus and a range of trendy toys. The new inflight
service concept called "Lu's World" was introduced
on July 1, 2000. "Lu's World"
extends Lufthansa's commitment to service for children to
include luscious food, games and inflight enjoyment for
junior flyers. Children are treated to a delectable
selection of meals that include mouse-shaped bread rolls,
pancakes, raw vegetables formed into a butterfly with cheese
and sliced turkey wings, colourful rice dishes and chocolate
mousse with honey.
To amuse and entertain
younger passengers games, paint books, Lu arm bags, finger
dolls and memory with Lu cards are provided that make time
fly in the cabin.
With all this attention given to children flying Lufthansa
they are sure to consider that "There is no
better way to fly".
