CRIB SAFETY SACK
"HELPS KEEP BABIES ON THEIR BACK"
The Crib Safety Sack "CSS" has been designed for use on babies under one year of
age to promote the "Back to Sleep" sleeping position
when using a full-size crib and mattress.
Combine the CSS with our Safety Crib Sheets for an even safer
sleeping environment. TO PURCHASE CRIB SAFETY SHEETS GO TO Hotel

Benefits of the CSS:
Many caregivers and grandparents may not be aware of the new
safety suggestions regarding placing baby on back. Use of
the CSS encourages parents to reinforce this safer sleeping
position when caregivers and grandparents are instructed on the
proper use of the CSS.
Parents of newborns are often encouraged in the hospital to
bundle babies as a way of making them feel secure and reduce
sudden waking from loud noises. The CSS encourages that bundled
feeling without being too tight around baby and gives parents easy
access to babies and relieves new parents about worrying if they
have bundled the baby correctly or that the blankets will become
dislodged.
A special added feature is that it is reversible. Should the
baby soil the CSS in the night or just to change bedding, both
front and back of the CSS has the flap. Just flip the mattress
over in its entirety if it is covered by a crib sheet or flip the
CSS for another use. Less washing, double use and no worries about
getting another CSS in the middle of the night.
No need for bumper pads in Crib as Baby is placed and stays in
the centre of crib. This has the benefit of providing an
unobstructed view of baby in addition to removing the danger that
bumper pads pose.

Features of the CSS
The CSS has the following features:
- It is made of flame resistant fleece crib blankets as
required by government standards.
- It is easily washable, easy to store and come in several
colours.
- It is easy to take and store in a diaper bag for travel.
- The basic design of the CSS is a sack that fits securely
around the bottom third of a standard crib mattress with side
bands that indicate the sides of the mattress. The front and
back of the CSS (which is reversible) has a flap that opens
and is secured by velcro when closed.
- The CSS is designed with no side seams that could pull apart
if baby pulls on the flaps. The only seam is at the bottom.
The flap is secured by velcro which an infant would find
difficult to separate, but easy for parents to open to place
or remove baby from the CSS. The design of the CSS eliminates
the need to tuck the blankets around the sides of the crib,
which is a somewhat difficult task.

Recommendations
from the Back to Sleep Campaign and the CPSC Safe Sleeping
Environment that are Promoted by the CSS:
The concerns of the US National Safe Kids Campaign with respect
to the safety of cribs, the recommendations for the reduction of
"Sudden Infant Death Syndrome" ("SIDS")
together with the need for crib bedding that would promote the
"Back to Sleep" campaign developed by the US
"National Institute of Child Health and Human
Development" ("NICHD") in conjunction with the
"American Academy of Pediatrics" ("AAP") and
the Safe Bedding Practices for Infants developed by the US
"Consumer Product Safety Commission" ("CPSC")
lead to the development of the Crib Safety Sack. See Travel
News: Crib Safety News
for more information.
The CSS promotes the following recommendations of the CPSC Safe
Sleeping Environment and the NICHD Back to Sleep Campaign:
- In using the CSS as a crib blanket, the baby is placed on
its back under the flap and the flap is then closed over the
baby’s chest and under the arms on the bottom third of the
bed with the sides of the CSS acting as blankets tucked around
the sides of the mattress as recommended by the CPSC.
- If the baby is placed on the Back in the CSS with the flap
closed, the likelihood of the baby being able to roll over
into a prone position (on its stomach) is greatly reduced. In
addition, the NICHD reports that when babies are placed on
their side, they are sometimes able to roll into a prone
position.
- The NICHD also reports that many caregivers do not follow
the recommendations of using the Back to Sleep position.
Instructing your caregiver on the use of the CSS is
recommended. The NICHD also reports that many parents revert
back to using the prone position for sleeping once the babies
are 3 to 4 months of age. It is hoped that the CSS would
encourage the Back to Sleep position to 12 months of age.
Babies would become accustomed to sleeping in this position
and parents would then continue to place babies on their back.
- The CSS is made of flame resistant fleece which promotes
warmth without overheating as recommended by the NICHD that
babies not be covered with too many or heavy blankets due to
the risk of suffocation and overheating which are considered
to increase the risk of SIDS occurring.
- The design of the CSS makes it virtually impossible to pull
loose from the sides and cover the baby’s face or head.
- No need for bumper pads on Cribs as Baby occupies the centre
of crib.
