INFORMATION

United Air Lines feels
that traveling with infants and children requires a little
extra planning and attention to detail and offers tips to
help make flights an enjoyable experience for travelers and
children.
United Air Lines provides a children's game book on domestic
flights and a game pack containing several items on
international flights. They recommend that you
bring the child's favorite toy, coloring books, and
storybooks and give children something to eat or drink when
the plane is taking off and landing. This may help alleviate
ear pain caused by the pressure as the cabin adjusts to the
altitude.
Car seats
United Air Lines allows approved
infant car seats on board the aircraft a cabin seat for the
child has been confirmed. The seat must conform to all
applicable U.S. motor vehicle safety standards. If
manufactured after February 1985, the car seat should also
be certified for use in aircraft. Children
should be in the seat for for takeoff, landing, and during
turbulence. The following child restraint devices may not be
used on board the aircraft: booster seats, belly belts which
attach to adult seat belts only, and vests or harnesses
which hold the infant to the chest of the adult.
Bassinets
Bassinets are provided,
free of charge, on all international aircraft (747, 767,
DC10, and 777). When confirming reservations, request a seat
in an appropriate location for bassinet usage. These
bassinets are large enough to hold a child up to
approximately six months old. They may not be used for
takeoff, landing, or any time the fasten seat belt sign is
illuminated.
Bottles
Time permitting, the flight
attendant will be happy to warm bottles. United Air
Lines does not carry formula on board, or baby food unless
you have requested a special baby meal prior to the flight.
Changing tables and
diapers
There is a supply of diaper
packs on international flights, but it is always a good idea
to bring your own supply of diapers. There are changing
tables available on certain types of aircraft. Flight
attendants will direct passengers to the proper lavatory.
Seating
If traveling with an
infant, United Air Lines will not permit a passenger to sit
in a designated exit row seat or a seat directly adjacent to
an exit, in keeping with U.S. Federal Aviation
Administration regulations. Only one infant per each
grouping of seats on the aircraft is acceptable due to the
availability of oxygen masks.
Children's meals
Children's meals are
available for children who are 18 months or older and who
occupy a seat. The meals contain soft, easy-to-chew foods
and may include finger foods. Foods that may cause choking
or are highly seasoned are avoided. Two-percent milk and
juices are available onboard the aircraft.
Toddler meals
Toddler meals are available
for children who no longer require commercially prepared
baby foods and who are not eligible for children's meals
because they do not occupy a seat to accommodate a full tray
meal service.
Baby meals
Baby meals include strained
fruits, vegetables, and meats, and are available for
children up to two years of age. Milk and juices are
available onboard the aircraft.

The following information details United
Air Lines' policies with respect to Children traveling
alone:
Children ages five through
eleven who are traveling alone are considered unaccompanied
minors. Unaccompanied children must be at least five years
old to fly on United Air Lines. Fees and regulations that
apply are described below.
Fees
There is a $30.00 fee for
unaccompanied children traveling on United flights
everywhere except to and from Japan.
Safety
United Air Lines requires
information about who is bringing the children to the
airport and who is meeting them at their destination. All
information about unaccompanied children is entered into the
reservations computer. This essential information includes
the name, address, and telephone number of the responsible
adult bringing them to the departure airport and picking
them up at their destination.
To ensure that children are released to the proper person,
the responsible adult meeting unaccompanied children at
their destination must show photo identification.
Children from five through seven years of
age are accepted on United flights that are nonstop or
require no change of aircraft. They must be brought to the
departure airport by a parent or responsible adult who will
remain at the airport until the child boards and the
aircraft departs the gate. This individual must provide
evidence that another parent or responsible adult will meet
the child at their destination. Acceptable evidence includes
a name, address, and telephone number.
Children eight through eleven years of age are
accepted for transportation entirely on United or for travel
that includes flight connections to many other airlines.
United Air Lines' Unaccompanied Minor form
must be completed. Children are given a bright red and
white striped button to pin on their clothes. This button
easily identifies unaccompanied children to airline staff on
the ground and in the air.
A Boarding representative will introduce
the child to the flight attendant and provide the attendant
with any information pertinent to the child's flight.
Flight attendants are instructed to turn any children
traveling alone over to a United representative at the
destination. These representatives are responsible for
seeing that the child is released to the proper person. This
person needs to present photo identification.
Advise your child to stay on board the flight until they are
taken by a flight attendant to the representative.
Similar escort services for children 12 through 17 are
available if requested. The unaccompanied minor fee and
guidelines apply.
The unaccompanied minor form accompanies
each child traveling alone. Cell-phone and beeper numbers
should be supplied along with the other required information
when confirming the child's reservation.
If a flight may not operate as scheduled,
United Air Lines will advise you and suggest you confirm
travel for another flight or another day. On occasion,
unexpected weather such as fog, snow, thunderstorms, or air
traffic congestion may disrupt flight schedules. If this
happens, United Air Lines will attempt to let you know what
the situation is and update you during the delay if
possible.
Additional tips from United Air Lines
-
Give children a calling
card or teach them how to make collect calls so they can
always reach you.
-
Because unexpected
weather can disrupt flight schedules, United Air Lines
recommends that you confirm your unaccompanied child on
flights early in the day.

Infant fares
One child less than 24
months of age may travel free between U.S. points as well as
between the U.S. and Canada when accompanied by an adult.
When travel is international, a ticket must be purchased,
which is usually subject to a discounted fare depending on
the international point. One adult customer traveling with
more than one infant must purchase an adjacent seat for each
additional child, at the applicable fare. These children
must be properly secured in their seats. Passengers must be
at least 15 years old to hold an infant as a lap child.
